Germany opts for Fiberline GRP bridge

The German government has built a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) bridge, made using composite from Danish manufacturer Fiberline, over the Hamburgerstrasse highway near Hamburg

Project manager Sven Rosenbaum says he chose GRP for the 100m x 3.5m bridge, which was built in November and will open over the Christmas holidays, because of cost considerations.
“Conventional bridge structures often require costly and extensive maintenance after just 15 to 20 years,” he says. “We expect the new composite bridge to stand for 80 years without the need for major repairs.”
The GLP is also lightweight, making the bridge easy to move and assemble, he adds.
The bridge modules were constructed in the factory and then conveyed by road to Reinbek where they were craned into place on prepared footings.
“Prefabrication under controlled conditions prior to installation means high quality construction,” says engineer Heiko Trumpf. “Short-time installation on site also minimizes traffic disruption, a critical consideration for some projects.”
