At this year JEC exposition Degussa was awarded the first prize for innovative front part designed for Avanto Light train using foam
900 exponents and over 25000 people visiting JEC Composites Show-2006 that took place in Paris on March 28-30 justified the exposition's top rate among the composite materials industry events. As usual, the high spot of the event was presentation with Composites Innovation Awards. In the nomination "Ground Transport" the front part of Avanto train - a light-rail speed train was awarded the first prize for its design. This part of the train was manufactured by Jupiter Plast, Denmark, and Siemens Mass transportation, Germany. Its design is different not only due to its light weight but due to the fact that it's the first construction made of composite corresponding to DIN 5560 - a European crash standard. An integral component for this weight- and strength-optimized construction produced using a cost-effective vacuum-injection technology is Rohacell® sandwich panels' rigid engineering foam core. This material allows creating a unique fire-resistant glass-fiber face composite. It's made by Rohacell, Degussa High Performance Polymers division Films & Foams department. Being an urban and suburban transport, Avanto meets specific requirements for head car cowling (where the driver sits). Due to Rohacell® the train nose is light-weight having excellent crash resistance characteristics: it withstands 30-ton frontal loads. The cowling is designed in a way to have a curve that is to protect the driver and prevent head car deformations when crash occurs. The first cockpit parts will be supplied to the transport companies before the end of the year. - In case with Avanto Rohacell® once again proves it corresponds to specific requirements set by our customers, that it is used as a high-technology rigid engineering foam and is optimized for being used in finished articles - said Herman Seibert, head of Rohacell department in an informal discussion that tookg place at JEC.
